Accessibility

The standard Akadenia Security is built to, what follows your device's settings, how it's checked, what's still to do, and how to tell us about a problem.

Akadenia Security aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, on the dashboard, these docs, the free checkers and the public pages.

What follows your device

The app reads your device's settings and follows them, signed in or not:

  • Light or dark. It follows your system's appearance. Both themes meet AA contrast.
  • More contrast. When your system asks for more contrast, secondary text and the lines between rows and around cards get stronger, in either theme.
  • Less motion. When your system asks to reduce motion, the home page's animated scenes show their final state, and sections appear without sliding or fading in.

Text is a step larger than most dashboards: body text is 16px, and the smallest text anywhere is 12px.

Built in

  • Not by color alone. Every severity has a shape beside its name: an octagon for critical, a triangle for high, a diamond for medium, a circle for low and an "i" for info. Its colors are chosen to stay apart with each common kind of color blindness, and they step in lightness from critical to info, so they read in grayscale too.
  • Links look like links. A link in text is underlined, not only colored.
  • Keyboard. The dashboard is built to be used from the keyboard, with a visible focus ring. Menus open with the arrow keys and close with Escape.
  • Charts. Each chart also gives its numbers as text for screen readers.
  • Names for controls. Buttons, fields and menus have names a screen reader reads out, and icons that only decorate are hidden from it.

How it's checked

Every page of the app, filled with sample data, is checked with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 A and AA, in the light and dark themes, with normal and with more contrast, and for layout at phone, tablet and desktop sizes. A serious or critical problem fails the check. The checks run every week, and before a big change to the dashboard ships, so a smaller change can reach the app between runs; the next run catches what it broke.

Still to do

  • Your own choice of settings. The app follows your device's settings today. An Accessibility tab in your account settings, to choose text size, theme, contrast and motion for yourself, is coming.
  • Screen reader testing by hand. The automated checks find a lot, but not everything. We're testing the dashboard by hand with VoiceOver and NVDA, and fixing what we find.
